We purchased this bottle puzzle to give to a friend as a gift. The instructions are so poorly written that we couldn’t even figure out how to get it on the bottle correctly! We even looked up a video of it on You Tube, and still couldn’t get it on right. I was very disappointed in the bottle puzzle, especially since my friend got it open in 2 seconds. Would not recommend!

My wife and I bought two of these, and another one designed for wine bottles: Family Games Don’t Break the Bottle The Press Puzzle. While the wine bottle edition was alot of fun, and actually kind of cool as a decorative conversation piece in the kitchen, these two missed the mark.

    Issues with this toy/puzzle

    1) Setup difficulty – my wife and I struggled for about 30 minutes trying to figure out how get this thing set up correctly on a bottle much like the one displayed in the product photo. It’s possible we’re both just stupid, but I’m known for my speed/craftsmanship assembling ikea furniture.

    2) Fit – we had some pretty standard size bottle we were attempting to mount these on, and had a really hard time getting the puzzle to fit. If you’re looking to drop one of these on your dad’s favorite bottle of tequila, think again.

    3) Asthetics – granted we didn’t buy these for beauty, but compared to the wine bottle version (mentioned above), this thing was ugly as sin.

I got this for a bottle of scotch, and I could not make it work. The instructions made no sense and it kept falling apart where it screwed together. I thought I had paid less than $10 for the quality and when I looked at the receipt and realized it was over $20, I decided to return it. HUGE waste of money and time…

I thought this might be a fun way to present a bottle of liquor as a gift but it’s not as interesting as it looks. First, as everyone states the directions are really confounding. I tried to find help on the internet that other reviews have mentioned but had no luck. I just kept trying to repeat the instructions until it somehow worked – I don’t know what I did differently the last time that made it work either.

As a note, the string isn’t very stiff and it is hard to thread through the puzzle to get it set up. I pushed a small nail through the thread and used it as a pseudo needle. I don’t think it would have been possible to set up without something to help guide the string.

Another disappointment is that the puzzle doesn’t sit flat on top of the bottle. A person could reach in and unscrew the cap and pour a drink without solving the puzzle at all. The bottle is the right size and the vise fits on it, the neck is long enough to provide plenty of room to tighten the vise down lower on the neck so it can sit flush on the top, but I just couldn’t get it to stay in place.

The final disappointment is that someone can just cut the string and not worry about solving the puzzle to get at the bottle – i.e. there is no real incentive to even try to find the solution.

In short, even if you can get past the bad directions and find the right sized bottle to use, it doesn’t look interesting sitting on the bottle and I’m not sure anyone would even know what the intention of the object is without having the gift giver there to explain it.

We gave this to my husband’s Aunt who loves puzzles. We thought it was going to be a great gift, and something that would be hard, but could be done. It took everyone that was there Christmas day ALL day, and no one could figure it out. Even when we knew how to open it, it wouldn’t work. It only works on certain size bottles, so be careful you get the right thing or you won’t be able to even get this thing on a bottle. I’m sure someone can figure it out, and will have fun with it, but none of us could and it took the fun out of it.
