Midnight Sun: Review of Little Italy’s newest wine bar, Amedeo’s
Psst … I found an oasis among the dining hubbub of Little Italy. Don’t tell anyone. Osteria da Amedeo popped up on my radar a few months ago. It’s referred to as a wine bar, but it isn’t really. it’s an osteria, an Italian tavern that serves simple food and wine.

Question by Josh: How to secure a wine bottle to a wood Lathe?
So I’m trying to work with wine bottles on a wood lathe. I’m having trouble coming up with a contraption that will hold the bottle firmly and still attach to the lathe. I have already cut the bottles with a wet tile saw, what i’m trying to do is use the spinning action of the lathe to aid in efficiently and quickly sanding the rims down. As far as the wood chuck goes, do you think it’ll be sufficient enough to hold the cut bottle from the bottom?
Thanks!
-Josh

Hi, Josh, I’m trying to picture what you’re doing but it sounds kinda “iffy” to me. Like, there is a risk involved and too many bad things can happen, especially since glass bottles are fragile and not necessarily round (concentric) and will probably wobble a lot while spinning. You sound handy; may I suggest another way?

They sell a number of attachments for a common electric/battery hand drill (1/4″ – 3/8″ drive etc.). Some have a rather soft (rubber?) core with (as best I can describe it) strips of heavy duty abrasive (imagine strips of emory cloth but higher grade) that will expand (whip?) from the center with speed (rpm).

If you can secure your drill (a vice, friend, etc.,) you might be able to use these belts to smooth both the inside and outside sharp edges of the glass by gently rotating the bottles. Best I can come up with. Be sure to wear your goggles and gloves just in case. Use you wood lathe for the more creative things you do. GL

Now filmranger. That’s not nice. It’s bad manners to beat up on the “special” people. Leave Luke alone.

Seriously, I can’t believe he answered the question. Too funny.

  2. rcknll says:

yes yes,the order of service was correct!,and despite the fact you rested the bottle on the glass while serving, I still like your philosophy, why so little importance to the cork?its the number one check point to see if the bottle has been stored properly,I think is not only “if you can”,but “you should” present the cork, unless of course you have a plastic one or screw cap bottle, in any case, you should acknowledge this,I have seen many unhappy screw-cap-bottle-guests, they think is cheap…

  3. filmranger says:

    oh REALLY??? That’s fascinating!

Will you be my friend? I’ve always wanted a cool friend.

    please?

    Please?

that s what is aid stupid but in less words

  7. filmranger says:

The Ritz Carleton in London was busted a few years ago for double serving wine, ie; refilling bottles with leftovers from other customers. This is why you ALWAYS open the bottle at the table, so the customer is assured that the wine is what he ordered.

  8. lukellu says:

if you present an open bottled wine.. people may think that the wine was already opened for another person..

  9. hourglass555 says:

there’s no touch between the bottle and the glass ,
    !such a mistake!

if the entire table does not acknowledge you,you spill some on the table. Then if they are not appreciative of your serving humor, you bust the mans head with the label and “dry” hump his women.

the bottle should never touch the glass ..

  12. saintfletcher says:

Poured with right hand to the right of the guest and never touch the upper end of the bottle… Somehow, the napkin collar or “tie” never slips off. OK, these details are a pedantic bore. But I’m curious to see if the rules are different there. Blessings +^+^+ The Saint

  13. saintfletcher says:

Oh, the rules are a little different in Australia. All the rules are right: what you say. Here, in 5 star, the bottle always has a napkin collar to prevent spillage down the bottle. This is as well as the “spin” or twist. There is a way to fold the napkin the right way for 5 star. Also, the bottle is already open before you approach the table as they assume the wine “breathed” before it was open. But that is 5 star. Blessings +^+^+ The Saint

I don’t drink so I don’t really care; however, for those of you who do, buy a corkscrew.

    very cool…

  28. PinPointAcur8 says:

Looks like it takes a lot more strikes than shown here. He hits it four times and the cork hardly moves, but then it cuts to a shot where the cork is mostly out. Still, an awesome technique!

I grew up in the Napa Valley and had never heard of this. Very cool.

  35. preferredshares says:

have seen this done with my own eyes 25 years ago–works by shock waves created by the strike impact force. The impulse is transmitted to the cork with little attenuation (some compression in the air pocket). The cork takes the impulse force and overcomes the static friction … each strike moving a small fraction of an inch. The example i saw took about fifty blows of reasonbly strong force creating a bit of fear that the bottle was at risk of breaking–would advise some caution. it’s real.

A decision about whether this ids a hoax needed?? Nope. The set-up of the delivery truck, taxi and the two cars in front is not supporting a significant delay in the shooting of this.. Grey hair?? Short hair on the top of his head with visibility to the scalp.. If it is a stand in it is well done. Still cannot discount the replacement bottle though.. So I tried it. I now have an open bottle of vino and no time to drink it.. (It will breath for a day now..)
